Caring For The Aged - Great and Easy Things to Do for Handicapped Elderly Persons

Dec 4th, 2011 Charles Tetsal

It's bad enough that we all have to get old and can't stay young forever, but it gets even worse when a person who is elderly is not only stuck with old age and a handicapped but is also finding themselves living away from their homes and in a nursing home. These places can help make the senior feel all alone and even completely isolated from the rest of the world.

So it's a really good idea to try and help these people get involved in things that are easy to do but still helps to stimulate their mind and body.

One of the things that can be done is to arrange for the elderly to take short trips somewhere. They can be taken out to listen to an interesting lecture, take them to a play, or visit a museum or an art gallery. Even taking them out to lunch is a great way for them to get away from the dull drums of a nursing home. Sometimes nursing homes even have money set aside for day trips for their patients.

You don't have to worry about their handicap getting in their way there are a variety of different transportation companies that offer lifts to different places and most places you go these days will have accommodations for handicapped people including wheelchair parking and bathroom stalls that are wider just for wheelchairs.

No matter how old a person gets, it seems to be part of human nature to enjoy the sound of music. Music has a way of soothing the soul or livening up ones spirits, depending upon the kind of music it is. So it's always a great idea to take elderly out to enjoy some sort of musical event. They can be taken where they can just sit back and listen to the music or it can be somewhere they can get involved with the music, of course it all depends up what kind of disability that they have.

There are a lot of churches and church groups that give concerts and there are those who are individual singers who play instruments that love to come and socialize and perform for people who are in need of such entertainment. Research can be done to find those people to give the elderly a nice mental lift with their talents.

Take the elderly person to a community pool and get them into doing some easy exercises in the pool and make sure the exercises focus on range of motion type exercises. This will not only help the mobility of the older person but it will also relieve pain and give them an opportunity to be with others and when done they will feel relaxed and refreshed.

Birthday parties are a wonderful social event for the elderly. Especially if the party is for someone in their family or it's for a friend. This gives them an opportunity to socialize, talk about fun and good memories and of course there's nothing like enjoying a good piece of cake with maybe a little ice cream on the side.
