Aging Life Resources - Getting Yourself a Cell Phone Plan That is Good for Seniors

If you are a senior and don't have a cell phone yet because you are not sure what kind of a plan you should get, there are a variety of different plans that are offered for seniors that are very good and that come with phones that are very easy to use. So if you have been putting off getting a cell phone because of the complexity of the phones or confusion about the phone plans, no need to worry there is something out there for you.

Before you go out and buy a phone it's a good idea to sit down and figure out what kind of phone is going to be the best for you and your individual needs. Figure out how much you use a phone and how long you generally talk on the phone every month. Some plans will offer unlimited types of services and others will offer the kind that you pay as you go. Do you want the phone to be your main phone or do you just need it for emergencies when you are away from home?

If you don't want a phone for any other reason but to call for help from 911, most cell phones are equipped to allow a person to contact 911 without even having a phone plan whatsoever. This means you can call 911 even if there are no minutes on the phone. So you could perhaps get an older phone from a friend or relative or you can get a very cheap, around $10 throw away cell phone from any place that sells them, just to use for that 911 call.

You may talk to your family and see if they are on a family plan and if they are, perhaps they will allow you to join their family plan. This way you could have a phone and just pay for whatever amount it is a month for that extra phone that your family added to their family plan.

For a lot of seniors however; the perfect phone plan is the prepaid plan. With this type of plan you can purchase however many minutes you want for your phone and some of them even allow you to put a prepaid amount on your phone on a monthly basis, so that you always get the same amount each month added to your phone.

And even if you run out before the next month you can go and add whatever amount of minutes you want to the phone before the next installment of minutes. These are great plans for the person who doesn't use their cell phone as their primary phone.

If you decide to go with one of the major companies make sure that you ask them for any special programs that they might have for seniors. If you are a member of an aged support organisation they could probably help as well in looking for companies with seniors specific phone plans. Remember, if you don't ask, they are not going to offer the discounts, so don't be afraid to ask.
